Amazon ECS Gateway: Simplifying Ingress for Containerized Workloads

Ingress management is often a bottleneck for teams deploying containerized applications. Amazon ECS Gateway addresses this by providing a fully-managed ingress solution that simplifies networking for your ECS services. It dynamically provisions and manages the necessary infrastructure, allowing your teams to focus on building and deploying applications rather than wrestling with load balancers and routing configurations.

At its core, ECS Gateway utilizes Application Load Balancers (ALBs) for host-based routing. This setup allows up to 25 services to share a single ALB, optimizing your infrastructure costs. When you connect your first service, ECS provisions the initial ALB, and as your needs grow, it automatically adds more ALBs, scaling up to a maximum of 10. Each service gets a unique DNS hostname, providing your teams with ready-to-use endpoints as soon as provisioning completes. You can also configure the gateway with an IAM role for resource management and specify whether the load balancing scheme is public or VPC-internal.

In production, be aware of some critical limitations. If you reach the maximum ALB count and no ALB has available capacity, your deployment will fail. Additionally, a single gateway can be associated with up to 10,000 clusters, but each cluster only supports five gateway associations. This means planning your architecture is essential to avoid bottlenecks. ECS Gateway is available for services using the awsvpc network mode across all launch types, including EC2, Fargate, and ECS Managed Instances.

Key takeaways

  • →Leverage ECS Gateway for simplified ingress management in containerized applications.
  • →Utilize ALBs for host-based routing, allowing up to 25 services to share a single ALB.
  • →Configure IAM roles to manage networking resources effectively.
  • →Plan your architecture to avoid hitting the maximum ALB count, which can lead to deployment failures.
  • →Use unique DNS hostnames for each service to streamline endpoint access.

Why it matters

In production, ECS Gateway significantly reduces the complexity of managing ingress, allowing teams to deploy services faster and with less operational overhead. This can lead to improved agility and responsiveness to business needs.
